Sampling the Best in Local Drinks When Sailing in Greece

By MedSailors Crew published on 7 December 2016

One of the best things about travelling abroad is getting to try something new – whether that is a new sport, a new location or even a new cuisine, it is a holiday must. And when it comes to trying something new in Greece, the possibilities are endless. But why not start with these authentically Greek beverages?

In the morning, whether it is breakfast or brunch, you could try a frappe. Of course, this is a drink that has transcended its Greek heritage to make it on to coffee shop menus worldwide, but there’s nothing quite like trying the traditional blend in the place it was created. A perfect way to recover from the night before, a frappe is essentially an iced coffee – both refreshing and invigorating, it’s an ideal start to the day.

When you get to lunch, a glass of retsina goes perfectly with the relaxed nature of a traditionally Greek mezze meal. Very like white wine but with something of a bitter after-taste, this is a drink best served ice-cold. And although it is something of an acquired taste, it is certainly authentically Greek!

Lastly, you could kick off your evening with a shot of ouzo. Indicative of the fun a Greek holiday offers, and characterised by the flavour of aniseed, true ouzo can only be found in this particular region. Either neat or mixed with water, you must give ouzo a try when sailing in Greece!
