What Is There To Do in Hydra Town?

Wander the Car-Free Streets

One of Hydra’s most unique features is its complete lack of cars. Instead, donkeys and boats are the primary modes of transport, preserving the island’s traditional charm. Stroll through narrow, winding alleyways lined with stone houses, colourful flowers, and hidden courtyards.

Watch a Spectacular Sunset

As the day winds down, head to one of the best sunset spots in Hydra, such as Spilia Beach Bar or Hydronetta, to enjoy breathtaking views over the Saronic Gulf with a cocktail in hand.

Enjoy Authentic Greek Cuisine: Devour delicious Greek dishes and traditional mezze, or grab a takeaway gyros and snack by the seaside. Try grilled octopus, saganaki cheese, and freshly caught local fish while watching the boats drift into the harbour and the fisherman return with the catch of the day.

Explore Hydra’s Rich History

Visit historic mansions, museums, and art galleries, including the Lazaros Kountouriotis Mansion and the Hydra Museum, to learn about the island’s fascinating past.

Hit the Amazing Local Shops

Hydra Town is known for its local artisans, creating gorgeous pottery and elaborate silver jewellery. Hydra is the best town while island hopping the Saronics to get souvenirs, crafts, and silver.

Why is Hydra Famous?

Hydra, one of the most famous Saronic Islands of Greece, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. Though it was sparsely populated in antiquity, the island became an important naval power during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Greek War of Independence

During the Greek War of Independence (1821-1830), Hydra played a crucial role in Greece’s fight against Ottoman rule. The island’s powerful fleet, funded by its wealthy merchant families, significantly contributed to the war effort. Hydra’s naval commanders, such as Andreas Miaoulis, became national heroes.

An Escape for Poets, Writers, and Artists

In the 20th century, Hydra transformed into a cultural hub. Artists, writers, and musicians, including Leonard Cohen, Henry Miller, and George Seferis, were drawn to its stunning beauty and peaceful, car-free atmosphere. Today, Hydra is known for its preserved architecture, art scene, and historic mansions, many of which have been turned into museums.
